Emergency crews responded to a home in theSlough Road in Bloom Township, after reports of an unresponsive person around 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home.
Authorities said the elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine other individuals—including several responding firefighters—were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly released.
Fairfield County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the source of the carbon monoxide leak. Early indications suggest a malfunctioning furnace may have been involved, though officials emphasized that the cause remains under review.
Neighbors reported seeing multiple emergency vehicles lining the street as hazmat teams worked to ventilate the home. The local Fire Chief urges residents to install and regularly test carbon monoxide detectors, calling the incident a “preventable tragedy.”
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the silent danger carbon monoxide poses,” the chief said. “With heating systems running this time of year, we urge everyone to take precautions.”
Officials expect to release further details pending autopsy results and the outcome of the investigation.
