The operation, which begins Thanksgiving night and continues through the weekend, will focus heavily on major shopping destinations like Easton Town Center, Polaris Fashion Place, and the retail corridors surrounding Sawmill Road. With thousands of bargain-hunters expected to crowd stores before sunrise, the department’s message is clear: extra eyes will be everywhere.
Sergeant Marcus Landon of the Retail Crime Unit said the operation was developed to deter both petty theft and organized retail crime rings. “We know criminals take advantage of this time of year when stores are crowded and shoppers are distracted,” Landon explained. “Our goal is to create a visible presence that reminds everyone—whether you’re a shopper or a store employee—that we’re out there and watching.”
Uniformed officers, undercover detectives, and community liaison officers will patrol parking lots and shopping centers. Several mobile surveillance units will also monitor high-traffic areas. Police are working closely with mall security and major retailers, sharing live information to respond swiftly to any incidents.
Earlier this month, the department held training sessions for retail employees on recognizing suspicious activity, reporting theft attempts, and assisting victims. Officers emphasized that many holiday crimes are crimes of opportunity—unlocked cars, unattended purses, or distracted buyers can quickly become targets.
In addition to theft prevention, “Operation Sleigh Crime” includes safety efforts aimed at managing traffic congestion and maintaining order in parking lots, where tempers can flare amid limited spaces and long lines. Columbus Police advise shoppers to remain patient, plan ahead, and, when possible, use designated pedestrian paths and crosswalks.
The initiative also seeks to combat a growing trend in organized retail theft. Across Ohio, police have seen an increase in coordinated shoplifting groups who strike multiple stores in a single night. These thefts often result in significant financial losses for businesses and heightened anxiety among workers. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers nationwide have reported a steady uptick in such crimes over the past three years, prompting more police departments to launch targeted enforcement operations during the holidays.
Residents can expect to see more flashing lights in parking areas but are encouraged not to be alarmed. “A strong police presence is the best deterrent,” Landon said. “We want families to enjoy their shopping experience without fear or stress.”
Columbus Police are also urging the public to take simple steps to protect themselves: lock vehicles, conceal valuables, shop in groups, and report any suspicious behavior immediately. The department will share real-time updates on social media throughout the weekend, reminding citizens of safe shopping practices and current traffic conditions.
As holiday shoppers chase the year’s biggest discounts, “Operation Sleigh Crime” aims to keep the spirit of giving free from the shadow of crime.
