MAUMEE — Maumee City Schools has been placed in a precautionary financial state by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce after the district projected budget deficits, and it has been ordered to begin planning spending cuts.
The precautionary designation is the state’s first formal step when a district’s financial forecasts show trouble ahead. Districts under fiscal precaution must develop a plan to address projected shortfalls. If the financial picture keeps worsening, the state can move a district to the more serious “fiscal watch” and “fiscal emergency” designations, under which state oversight grows considerably.
District officials have not yet detailed which programs or positions could face cuts. Maumee, a suburban district just southwest of Toledo, will now work with state education officials on a corrective financial plan.
The development comes as districts across Ohio grapple with tight budgets, expiring federal aid and rising costs, putting school finances under a statewide microscope this fall.
