MARION — Prosecutors in Marion County announced Oct. 8 that five people have been charged in an elaborate scheme to smuggle drugs into the county jail, including three people who were already behind bars on murder charges.

Investigators say the conspirators used the street clothes that defendants wear during court appearances as the delivery method. Suboxone strips were hidden in compartments sewn into the garments, allowing associates on the outside to pass the drugs to inmates heading back from hearings. Court documents describe more than two dozen transcribed jail phone calls in which one inmate directed a contact outside the jail to buy the strips, arranged for hidden pockets to be sewn into clothing, and recruited other inmates with upcoming court dates to act as couriers. A second inmate, a codefendant in a 2025 murder case, is accused of investing in the operation and identifying inmates who could serve as carriers.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears called it the most interesting case he has seen in 20 years as a prosecutor. Officials say the scheme was uncovered through the recorded calls and that the investigation included the prosecutor’s office working alongside jail staff.

The five now face charges tied to the smuggling operation. Prosecutors have not said whether additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
