CLEVELAND — Cleveland is expected to announce Friday what will become of 12 of the 18 closed Cleveland Metropolitan School District buildings, a decision that could reshape neighborhoods across the city.

Mayor Justin Bibb has said he wants the shuttered buildings reused for purposes that benefit the surrounding communities, rather than letting them sit vacant or fall into disrepair.

The announcement, expected Friday, would address the majority of the district’s closed properties. The future of the remaining six buildings was not part of the expected announcement.

City officials have long wrestled with what to do with surplus school buildings as enrollment shifts and consolidation leave aging facilities empty. Vacant schools can become targets for vandalism and drag down nearby property values, while successful reuse can anchor neighborhood revitalization.

Bibb’s emphasis on community benefit signals the city may favor proposals such as affordable housing, community centers, or small business space over simply selling to the highest bidder. The mayor’s office has not released details ahead of the announcement.

Residents and neighborhood groups have pressed the city for years to act on the long-vacant buildings, arguing that leaving them empty wastes public assets in communities that need investment.
