CANAL FULTON — A Canal Fulton man is accused of stealing more than $24,000 from an elderly woman and spending the money on casino trips, according to a criminal complaint filed in Massillon Municipal Court.
The complaint outlines a pattern of financial exploitation in which the man allegedly diverted the woman’s money to gambling rather than legitimate expenses. Investigators say the theft drained a significant portion of the victim’s funds.
Elder financial exploitation is a growing concern across Ohio and the nation. Federal crime data shows Americans over 60 lose billions of dollars a year to fraud and exploitation, with acquaintances and caregivers among the most common perpetrators.
In Ohio, financial exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult is a serious criminal offense, and penalties can escalate based on the amount stolen. Stark County prosecutors have said they prioritize these cases because victims often depend entirely on the savings that are taken.
Advocates urge families to watch for warning signs, including unexplained withdrawals, sudden changes to banking arrangements, and a caregiver’s reluctance to let others review accounts.
The case remains before the Massillon Municipal Court, where proceedings are ongoing.
