HANCOCK COUNTY — Residents across Hancock County were treated to a spectacular sight late Tuesday evening as a bright fireball meteor illuminated the night sky, marking the second such event reported in Ohio this month.

Shortly after 10 p.m., dozens of witnesses took to social media describing a vivid streak of light followed by a brief flare before disappearing near the horizon. Some compared the fiery display to a “shooting star on fire,” while others said the flash momentarily lit up surrounding fields and streets.

Preliminary reports gathered by the American Meteor Society (AMS) indicate the object was likely a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. The organization received several sighting reports from across northwest Ohio, including observations from neighboring counties.

Dr. Karen Wills, an astronomy lecturer at Bowling Green State University, said the meteor’s brightness suggests it was a fairly large fragment of space debris. “What residents saw was the result of intense friction as the meteor broke apart in the atmosphere,” Wills explained. “These fireball events are spectacular but not uncommon. The fact that it’s the second occurrence in Ohio recently is a coincidence rather than a cause for concern.”

No impacts or damage have been reported, and officials say it’s unlikely any fragments reached the ground. However, astronomers encourage those who recorded videos or captured photos to share them with the AMS to help pinpoint the meteor’s path.

Similar sightings were reported earlier this month in central Ohio, sparking renewed public interest in celestial events visible from the state.
