TOLEDO — Some of Ohio’s most celebrated poets will take over the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Main Library in downtown Toledo on Saturday for the statewide celebration of Ohio Poetry Day.

The daylong gathering is built around poetry readings, hands-on workshops and crafts, giving working poets, students and casual readers a chance to hear award-winning voices and try writing of their own. Ohio Poetry Day is an annual statewide observance, and Toledo’s turn as a host puts Northwest Ohio at the center of this year’s festivities.

The Main Library, at Michigan Street and Madison Avenue, is one of the region’s busiest literary venues, regularly hosting author talks, writing programs and community arts events. Saturday’s program adds a statewide spotlight, drawing poets and poetry fans from beyond Lucas County into downtown Toledo.

Organizers say the mix of formal readings and informal workshops is deliberate: the day is meant as much for people who have never written a poem as for published poets collecting honors.

Ohio Poetry Day events in Toledo cap a busy fall arts calendar in Northwest Ohio, which this month also includes the Toledo Zoo’s Harvest Fest and a lineup of concerts and theater productions across the region. Poetry fans planning to attend Saturday’s celebration are encouraged to check the library’s schedule for session times.
