CARDINGTON, Ohio — A visiting judge on Monday sentenced Dalton Edwards to 30 to 32.5 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to 58 counts connected to child sexual exploitation.
Family members and victims filled the courtroom to witness the conclusion of a case that has deeply shaken the Cardington community.
The investigation, launched by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Cleveland, began after reports surfaced that Edwards used a social media account to upload and share child sexual abuse material. A subsequent search warrant for his electronic devices revealed a large cache of illegal images. Evidence showed that Edwards manipulated photos of students he had supervised as a school volunteer, turning them into sexually explicit material—an act that violated both their trust and privacy.
During sentencing, four victims delivered emotional statements describing the lasting impact of Edwards’ actions. Their testimonies highlighted the pain, betrayal, and loss of safety that followed his abuse of authority.
While issuing the sentence, the judge emphasized the need for both accountability and the opportunity for rehabilitation. After completing his prison term, Edwards will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years.
Prosecutor Wick praised the courage of the victims who came forward and recognized Victim Services Director Richelle Ettel for her continued support throughout the case. Wick also credited Detective Sergeant Clarke and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for their meticulous investigation that led to a resolution.
“This case is especially painful because the defendant is young, yet committed acts that deeply betrayed the trust placed in him,” Wick said. “Our small communities depend on volunteers to protect and guide our children. What happened here represents a devastating breach of that responsibility.”
The sentencing includes provisions for potential release under strict supervision, reflecting an effort to balance public safety with the possibility of rehabilitation. Wick expressed hope that Edwards will use his time in prison to acknowledge the harm he caused and commit to personal growth and restitution.
