VAN WERT, Ohio — Police in Van Wert, Ohio, say an emergency overdose call on Sunday led to the discovery of a substantial cache of drugs, weapons, and cash inside a home on North Washington Street, in what local officials describe as one of the city’s more significant recent narcotics seizures. No arrests had been announced as of Monday, but the case has been forwarded to the county prosecutor for review of potential charges.

Overdose call turns into raid

According to a statement from the Van Wert Police Department, officers and Van Wert EMS responded on December 21 to a report of a possible overdose at a residence in the 700 block of N. Washington St., where they found a younger male unresponsive on the floor. The man received treatment at the scene before being transported to OhioHealth Van Wert Hospital for further care.

While medics worked on the patient, officers reported seeing suspected drug items in plain view inside the home, prompting police to secure the scene and apply for a search warrant. That warrant opened the door to what investigators now describe as a large-scale drug and weapons seizure with an estimated six-figure street value.

Large quantities of drugs recovered

In a subsequent search, police say they confiscated what Chief Doug Weigle called “an unbelievable amount” of THC vape pens and cartridges, which investigators believe were being marketed toward people under 18. Officers also reported seizing a very large amount of marijuana, a very large amount of hash oil or hash “butter” stored in Mason jars, and a significant quantity of cocaine from inside the residence.

Authorities estimate the street value of the drugs alone at roughly 250,000 dollars, underscoring the scale of the alleged operation housed in the otherwise ordinary North Washington Street property. Additional pills and substances were collected and will be sent for laboratory analysis to determine their exact contents.

Weapons, cash and precious metals

The search also turned up what police describe as a large number of rifles and ammunition, along with a flamethrower, all seized as part of the investigation. Alongside the weapons, officers reported finding approximately 40,000 dollars’ worth of cash, gold, silver and copper bars, which were taken as suspected proceeds of drug trafficking.

Local authorities say the combination of high-value drugs, large amounts of cash and precious metals, and multiple firearms suggests an entrenched criminal enterprise operating out of the residence. The items have been logged as evidence while detectives work to map possible supply and distribution networks tied to the address.

Concerns about products targeting youth

In public statements, Chief Weigle urged parents and grandparents to closely examine any vape pens and cartridges they find in their homes, saying the packaging in this case appears designed to appeal to minors. Police released images of the seized THC products and reiterated that some of the branding resembles candy or snack packaging that could easily catch the eye of underage users.

Investigators say they are particularly troubled by the apparent targeting of teenagers at a time when THC vaping among youth is already a mounting concern for schools and health officials. Residents who recognize similar packaging or suspect drug activity in their neighborhood are being asked to contact police.

Next steps in the investigation

Van Wert County Prosecutor Eva Yarger is expected to review the evidence collected from the home to determine what charges, if any, will be filed in connection with the case. Police noted that while no arrests were made at the scene, the ongoing investigation could lead to multiple counts related to drug trafficking, weapons offenses, and possession of criminal tools.

The Van Wert Police Department is asking anyone with information about drug sales or trafficking linked to the North Washington Street area to call 419-238-2462. Local officials say community tips will be critical in tracing how the seized drugs moved into and through the city, and in preventing similar overdose calls from turning deadly.
