What Police Say Happened
Lake Township police said officers were called around 10:45 p.m. Friday to a home on Lake Pointe Drive in Northwood on a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 15-year-old girl dead from a gunshot wound inside the residence. The Wood County community, just east of Toledo, is policed by Lake Township officers under a contract with the city of Northwood.
Investigators identified the alleged shooter as Jakob U. Heintzelman, 18, who was at the scene when officers arrived, according to police and local media reports. He was taken into custody overnight as detectives began interviewing witnesses and processing the home for evidence.
Charges Filed
Heintzelman has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with the girl’s death, Lake Township police confirmed in statements shared with local outlets and on social media. Reckless homicide under Ohio law generally alleges that someone caused another person’s death by recklessly handling a dangerous situation, such as a firearm, rather than with premeditated intent.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what led up to the shooting or who owned the firearm involved. No additional charges had been announced as of Monday, and officials have not said whether they expect to seek further counts as the investigation continues.
Victim And Community Impact
Police have not released the 15-year-old’s name, citing her age and the ongoing investigation. The girl was described only as a local teenager, and it was not immediately clear whether she lived at the Lake Pointe Drive address or was visiting.
Neighbors told local stations the quiet residential street was flooded with cruisers late Friday as officers blocked off the area and worked into the early morning hours. Grief counselors are expected to be available at the girl’s school as the Northwood community grapples with the loss of a student and the circumstances of another teen now facing a felony charge.
Ongoing Investigation
Lake Township police said detectives are still working to determine how the shooting occurred, including why a gun was present and how it was handled before it discharged. Investigators have not said whether they believe the shooting was accidental, only that the facts so far support a reckless homicide charge.
The case will be forwarded to the Wood County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review and potential presentation to a grand jury. Heintzelman is expected to appear in court for an initial hearing this week, where a judge will consider bond and appoint an attorney if he does not already have one.
