The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) has officially approved a major renewable energy initiative in the state— the 199-megawatt Ritter Station Solar Project in Fulton County. The decision marks another significant step in Ohio’s ongoing shift toward clean and sustainable energy sources.

The Ritter Station Solar Project, developed by a subsidiary of Lightsource bp, will occupy roughly 1,400 acres of privately leased farmland near the county’s western border. Once operational, the project is expected to generate enough electricity to power an estimated 35,000 homes annually while offsetting over 200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Local officials and project backers say the development brings both economic and environmental benefits. Construction is expected to create hundreds of temporary jobs and generate millions in tax revenue for local schools, infrastructure, and community services. In addition, participating landowners will receive steady lease payments over the project’s lifespan.

While many community members welcome the economic boost and environmental impact, some residents have raised concerns about land use, visual impact, and potential effects on nearby agricultural operations. The OPSB’s approval includes a series of conditions intended to mitigate these concerns, such as vegetative screening, stormwater management plans, and requirements for eventual site restoration.

The OPSB’s ruling reflects Ohio’s increasing interest in large-scale solar projects. With more than a dozen similar proposals under review across the state, the Ritter Station Solar Project represents both a milestone and a model for future renewable energy development in the Midwest.

Construction is slated to begin in mid-2026, with commercial operations expected by late 2027.
