COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing a storm of criticism after posting—and then swiftly deleting—a video proposing year-round schooling across the state. The proposal, which Ramaswamy described as a “21st-century fix for an outdated system,” drew such disbelief that many supporters initially dismissed the footage as a deepfake created by political opponents.

Ramaswamy’s video, apparently recorded in his Columbus campaign headquarters, called for eliminating the traditional three-month summer break in favor of shorter, evenly spaced vacations throughout the year. He argued the change would “improve learning outcomes, reduce childcare stress on working parents, and prepare Ohio’s students for a competitive global economy.”

However, within hours of the post, the clip was met with a mix of confusion, anger, and skepticism online. Parents, educators, and even some Republican allies condemned the idea as tone-deaf and unrealistic. Several education groups labeled the plan “unworkable,” citing teacher burnout, school maintenance schedules, and cost concerns.

The reaction quickly escalated when Ramaswamy deleted the original video from his campaign’s social media accounts without explanation. That move fueled speculation that the recording was a fabrication or the product of AI manipulation. It took nearly a full day before Ramaswamy’s communications team confirmed the video’s authenticity, telling reporters that the campaign had “removed it to clarify context.”

“We’re exploring innovative education reforms,” a campaign spokesperson said Monday. “Governor Ramaswamy believes Ohio needs fresh ideas—and that includes rethinking the school calendar. The video was taken out of context and did not reflect the complete policy vision being developed.”

Still, the controversy marks the most turbulent moment yet in Ramaswamy’s young campaign. Political analysts say the episode could damage his image among suburban parents, a crucial voting bloc in the governor’s race. “This is the kind of unforced error that reinforces the perception of Ramaswamy as impulsive with policy,” said Dr. Lauren Keller, a political science professor at Ohio State University. “Deleting the video only magnified the confusion.”

As the debate continues, school boards and teacher unions across Ohio are demanding details. The Ohio Federation of Teachers issued a statement questioning how Ramaswamy’s plan would address staffing and financial challenges: “Extending the school year without increased funding is not reform—it’s fantasy.”

Whether the backlash will derail Ramaswamy’s campaign remains to be seen. But for now, his push for “year-round school” has turned into a year-round headache.
