CHILLICOTHE — Ohio University Chillicothe will open a new gallery exhibition next week when “Dive In,” a show of work by central Ohio artist Michael Kirk, debuts at the Patricia Scott Memorial Art Gallery with a public reception at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Kirk works in oil, acrylic, watercolor and cut paper, and his current paintings lean into bright color, bold black outlines and abstract figures built from repeating spheres and patterns. He is based in neighboring Pickaway County, and campus leaders say the show brings a regional artist’s work to Ross County audiences.

The way Kirk begins a piece — starting with curiosity and no fixed direction in mind — is the same spirit campus officials say they hope students bring to their own learning. The gallery describes art as a vital form of communication and expression, and the reception will include live music and light refreshments.

The exhibition runs from Oct. 22 through Nov. 30. The gallery, on the first floor of Bennett Hall, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free to the public.
