COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Secretary of State’s office has certified the candidates for the May 5 primary election, clearing the field for key statewide races including a crowded Republican contest for governor.
Governor’s Race Primaries
In the Republican gubernatorial primary, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy — endorsed by President Donald Trump and the Ohio Republican Party — will face automotive business owner Casey Putsch and former Morgan County School Board President Heather Hill. The candidates met the requirement of submitting at least 1,000 valid signatures from registered voters across at least 30 of Ohio’s 88 counties.
Democrats have a clear path forward with Amy Acton, former state health director during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the sole certified candidate after gathering the necessary 1,000 signatures. Libertarian Don Kissick also qualified for the general election ballot with 500 signatures.
One Republican hopeful, Renea Turner, filed petitions by the February 4 deadline but failed certification after review by county boards of elections.
Certification Process
The certification followed a review of nominating petitions by Ohio’s 88 county boards of elections, ensuring compliance with signature thresholds set by state law. Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose released the official list this week, setting the stage for primaries that will determine nominees for the November 3 general election.
Ramaswamy has emphasized statewide economic development and education reform in recent campaign stops, while Acton has highlighted workforce training and public schools. With the primary about 10 weeks away, the governor’s race is expected to intensify as candidates ramp up outreach across Ohio’s urban and rural communities.
