Governor Mike DeWine has announced the release of a new driver safety app, RoadReady Ohio, coinciding with a significant update to the state’s driver’s education requirements.

The new law, effective September 30, standardizes training for young drivers by requiring individuals aged 18 to 20 to meet the same comprehensive training standards previously only mandated for 16 and 17-year-olds.

This change, which DeWine approved earlier this year as part of the state’s biennial budget, means anyone 21 and under must now complete a full driver’s education course and 50 hours of supervised practice. Previously, drivers 18 and older could bypass the full requirements or take a reduced course.

The stricter regulations come as the Governor cited alarming statistics, noting that 58% of last year’s fatal crashes involved 18 and 19-year-olds.

The new RoadReady Ohio app is intended by DeWine’s office to support families and new drivers as they fulfill the practice requirements for their driver’s license.
