Marion City Auditor Resigns, Citing 'Games of Local Politics'
Marion City Auditor Miranda Meginness submitted a strongly worded resignation letter dated Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, accusing local officials of treating her office as a political pawn and saying she can no longer “subject [herself] to the games of local politics.”

In the letter, Meginness writes that she took office on Nov. 29, 2021, inheriting what she describes as a “broken beyond belief” auditor’s office with no payroll clerk, only two staff members and “no clue” what she was walking into. She says she spent the last four years rebuilding the department, working nights, weekends and holidays while sacrificing time with her family to stabilize the city’s finances.

Meginness states she has “done everything in [her] power” to change procedures, improve processes and work with both past and current administrations and council members. Despite that, she writes that she has been labeled an “idiot” and believes some officials view her primarily as a target for blame rather than a partner in fiscal oversight.

Criticism of political climate

The auditor’s letter portrays a deep frustration with what she characterizes as a hostile political environment surrounding the city’s finances. She writes that “the politics of the position of City Auditor” have become intolerable and says she does not want herself or her family “torn apart for the sake of someone’s political gain.”

Meginness contends that her ethics and morals have “not been questioned lightly,” but says ongoing conflict has made it impossible for her to continue. She adds that while the city’s financial systems have improved under her leadership, she believes remaining in office would only fuel further political strife.

The resignation letter comes as three Marion City Council members have already filed affidavits with the Ohio Auditor of State seeking Meginness’ removal, alleging failures to maintain complete and accurate financial records and to make timely tax and retirement payments on the city’s behalf. Those filings claim the alleged lapses have blocked required annual audits since 2021 and led to penalties and interest for the city.

Under Ohio law, if the auditor’s office becomes vacant, city officials must appoint a qualified replacement to serve the remainder of the term. Marion’s website currently still lists Meginness as the city auditor, and officials have not yet publicly detailed a timeline for selecting her successor.
