COLUMBUS — The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center officially opened its new University Hospital today, marking the largest single-facility construction project in the university’s history and a new era for healthcare in Ohio.
The 26-story, state-of-the-art facility began welcoming patients early Sunday morning as medical teams coordinated the transfer of more than 425 patients into the expansive new building. The carefully planned move-in, expected to last throughout the day, marks the culmination of years of construction and preparation.
Hospital officials said the new facility was designed to meet the increasing demand for advanced medical care and research capabilities. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, expanded surgical and intensive care units, and patient-centered amenities, the hospital aims to set a new standard for both education and treatment at OSU.
“This opening isn’t just a milestone for Ohio State — it’s a milestone for the entire state of Ohio,” said Dr. Andrew Thomas, CEO of the Wexner Medical Center. “Our teams have worked tirelessly to create a space that integrates innovation, compassion, and education all under one roof.”
The University Hospital expansion is part of Ohio State’s long-term vision to strengthen its medical research and training infrastructure. The project, years in the making, represents a significant investment in healthcare and higher education, reinforcing the university’s role as a national leader in medical innovation.
Hospital operations are expected to fully transition to the new facility within days, with regular services resuming across all departments by the end of the week. The opening is being hailed as a transformative step for patient care across central Ohio — and a landmark moment for the state’s flagship university.
