Marcus Johnson, a senior at Garfield Heights High School, has been named Ohio’s Mr. Basketball for the second consecutive year by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association (OPSMA). The announcement on March 19, 2026, marks him as the seventh player to win the award twice since its inception in 1988 and the first repeat winner since Luke Kennard in 2014-15.

Family Legacy on the Court

Johnson’s achievement creates a historic father-son duo in Ohio basketball history. His father, Sonny Johnson, the Bulldogs’ head coach, claimed the same honor in 1998 while playing at Garfield Heights. Marcus first won as a junior in 2025 with 110 points in voting, edging out Delphos St. John’s Cam Elwer.

This season, Johnson elevated his game, averaging 30.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 2.7 steals despite a younger roster and tougher schedule, including a Florida tournament. He secured the 2026 award with 99 points from OPSMA’s statewide panel, narrowly beating Elwer’s 91.

Among Elite Finalists

Johnson stood out among seven finalists announced March 10, including Trey Drexler of Brunswick (26.5 ppg) and undefeated Tri-Village’s Trey Sagester. Garfield Heights’ campaign highlighted Johnson’s leadership on a team with no returning starters.

The OPSMA has selected Mr. Basketball since 2017, following the Associated Press’s run from 1988-2016. Johnson, a four-star recruit and All-Ohio first-teamer since freshman year, now holds family bragging rights.
