A former American Idol contestant convicted of murdering his wife is expected to learn his sentence Monday afternoon, when a Miami County judge sentences Caleb Flynn for the February shooting death of Ashley Flynn.

Flynn, 40, of Tipp City, was convicted Sept. 29 after about two and a half hours of jury deliberation on charges of aggravated murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. The sentencing hearing is set for 3 p.m. in Miami County Common Pleas Court, where he faces life in prison without parole.

Prosecutors said Flynn shot his 37-year-old wife, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, on Feb. 16 at their home in the 900 block of Cunningham Court and staged the scene to look like a home invasion.

Flynn was a music pastor and appeared as a contestant on season 12 of American Idol in 2013. The case drew national attention because of that television connection.

Ashley Flynn’s family and supporters are expected to attend Monday’s hearing, where victim-impact statements are typically heard before the judge imposes sentence.
