The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. in the 7000 block of Myers Road. According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Mike Farthing arrived at the scene to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames near a residence and several trees.
While Deputy Farthing was assisting with traffic control for arriving fire crews, he was reportedly ambushed. Investigators say a male resident of the property approached the deputy from behind and stabbed him.
Suspect in Custody
Following the attack, Deputy Farthing was able to call for emergency assistance. A massive response from multiple law enforcement agencies followed, resulting in the arrest of Phillip Brandon Lovely, 41. Authorities confirmed that Lovely was taken into custody without further incident.
Deputy Condition and Official Statement
Deputy Farthing was transported by ground to Atrium Hospital. As of Thursday evening, officials report he is conscious, alert, and listed in stable condition.
Sheriff Richard K. Jones, who visited the injured deputy at the hospital, emphasized the unpredictable nature of police work in a statement released shortly after the incident.
“Our deputies face life-or-death situations every single day, often without warning,” Sheriff Jones said. “This incident is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers encounter simply doing their job, and we are extremely grateful that this situation did not turn out worse.”
The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing. No further details regarding specific charges against Lovely have been released at this time.
