AKRON — A 35-year-old man was struck and killed early Saturday in Akron’s Highland Square in a violent crash that also left two drivers seriously injured, Akron police said.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on West Market Street near South Highland Avenue, according to a news release from Akron police Lt. Michael Murphy Jr. The preliminary investigation found that a Chrysler 300 was traveling west on West Market Street at a high rate of speed when it struck the man as he was crossing the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After hitting the pedestrian, the Chrysler continued west and struck the rear of a Buick Encore before plowing into two parked vehicles, a Nissan Altima and a Honda Pilot, the release states.
The driver of the Chrysler, a 45-year-old woman, and the driver of the Buick, a 57-year-old man, were both transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with serious injuries believed to be non-life threatening.
Officers believe speed was a factor in the crash and said they observed evidence indicating the Chrysler driver may have been impaired, according to the release. Investigators are still reviewing evidence and working to determine the appropriate charges.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends who are impacted by this tragic loss,” Murphy said in the release.
