A 34-year-old man is dead after Akron police say he shot himself Oct. 1 as authorities tried to arrest him at a home in the 500 block of Brown Street. Jonathan Moore of Akron was wanted on an active felony vandalism warrant.
Members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrived about 8:35 a.m. after two residents confirmed Moore was inside. Officers announced themselves at a locked bedroom door, forced it open when no one responded, and found Moore holding a gun. When he ignored commands to drop the firearm, one officer deployed a stun gun. Police say Moore then shot himself once in the head; at the same moment, an Akron detective fired a single round into Moore’s chest. Officers rendered aid before EMS transported him to Summa Health Akron, where he was pronounced dead at 8:58 a.m. No officers were injured.
The detective, an eight-year Akron police veteran, and the other officers at the scene are on paid administrative leave under department policy. The police union said the underlying vandalism case involved an incident targeting an officer.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the shooting, standard procedure when an officer fires a weapon.
