AKRON — An Akron police detective shot and killed a man Thursday morning after the suspect opened fire on officers who were trying to arrest him on a warrant, police said.
The shooting happened around 8:36 a.m. at a home on the 500 block of Brown Street, near the University of Akron. According to Lt. Michael Murphy, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force went to the home to arrest a suspect wanted on stalking and burglary charges. When officers attempted to make contact, the man drew a firearm and fired once at them; a detective returned fire, striking the suspect once. No officers were injured.
Summit County Medical Examiner’s chief investigator Gary Guenther confirmed a man died in the shooting but released no further details. The detective involved is an eight-year veteran of the Akron Police Department and has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy following an officer-involved shooting.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation, as is standard in such cases. Murphy said a more detailed news release would be issued within the next few hours.
