AEP Ohio announced Thursday that it will begin doing business as the Ohio Power Company starting Oct. 1, adopting the name the utility has carried as its legal name for years.

Customers will see the new name appear on bills, the company’s website, and other communications beginning in October. The company says the change is meant to give greater visibility to a name rooted in the communities it serves.

Along with the new name, customers will receive what the company describes as a clearer, redesigned monthly electric bill. The new bill format, approved earlier this year by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, is intended to make service costs easier to understand.

“The name ‘Ohio Power Company’ underscores our longstanding commitment to Ohio and the people and places that depend on us every day,” said Marc Reitter, the company’s president.

Company officials said the rebrand will not affect electric service, account information, rates, or how customers contact the company. Customers can keep using the same mobile app, and visitors to the old website will be automatically redirected to the new OhioPowerCo.com.

The utility said its 1,400 employees, who live and work in the communities they serve, will continue responding to outages and severe weather as usual.
