Authorities identified the suspect as 39-year-old Austen Medek, who was taken into custody Monday following an investigation by the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit. The victim, 41-year-old Michaela Medek, died in September after suffering severe head and neck injuries that authorities later determined were inconsistent with a fall.
The September Incident
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:25 a.m. on Sept. 10 at a home in the 5500 block of Englecrest Drive, a quiet residential neighborhood southeast of downtown Columbus. When police arrived, they found Michaela Medek unresponsive and gravely injured. Emergency personnel transported her to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries four days later, on Sept. 14.
At the time, her husband reportedly told investigators that Michaela had suffered a fall. However, as police began examining the circumstances surrounding her condition, inconsistencies began to emerge.
Autopsy Findings Shift Investigation
According to court documents filed in Franklin County Municipal Court, an autopsy performed by the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office in November revealed that Michaela’s injuries were the result of blunt force trauma to her head and neck — injuries that investigators said could not have come from an accidental fall.
The autopsy’s findings were pivotal, providing law enforcement with the evidence needed to reclassify the case from an unexplained injury to a homicide. Detectives also gathered additional physical evidence and witness statements, eventually identifying Austen Medek as the primary suspect.
Arrest and Ongoing Case
Police arrested Medek on Monday, charging him with one count of murder. Authorities have not yet detailed what led up to the incident or disclosed any potential motive. Records show that he remains in custody pending his first court appearance.
Neighbors on Englecrest Drive described the couple as largely private, though several expressed shock at the news of the arrest. “It’s just heartbreaking,” said one resident who asked not to be named. “You don’t expect something like this to happen right down the street.”
Continuing Investigation
Columbus Police say the case remains under investigation as detectives work to piece together the events that led to Michaela’s death. Officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730.
Michaela’s death marks yet another domestic-related homicide in central Ohio this year, according to police data, underscoring what local advocates have described as a continuing crisis of intimate partner violence statewide.
