Drivers across Ohio are hitting the roads in record numbers today, as the Thanksgiving travel rush reaches its peak. State transportation officials project that this will be one of the busiest travel days of the year, with highways expected to see heavy congestion from early morning through late evening.

To keep up with the surge, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) has stepped up enforcement efforts statewide. Troopers are prioritizing impaired and distracted driving, two major factors that contribute to holiday traffic crashes each year. Patrol officials say additional officers will be visible along major routes, rest areas, and interchanges throughout the day.

“We know this is an especially busy travel period, and we want everyone to arrive safely,” said an OSHP spokesperson. “Our focus will be on identifying drivers who are impaired, texting, or otherwise putting others at risk.”

According to AAA, more than 2 million Ohioans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this Thanksgiving weekend. While most will drive, airports are also reporting heightened activity, with longer wait times anticipated at check-in and security.

State officials are urging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time, and avoid distractions while behind the wheel. Troopers will continue to maintain high visibility through the weekend, as travel volumes remain elevated through Sunday evening.
