ROSE TOWNSHIP — A 45-year-old man was rescued Sunday night after he became caught in an auger at the top of a silo on a farm in Rose Township, in Carroll County.

A Carroll County sheriff’s deputy was the first to reach the scene. The deputy climbed to the top of the silo and applied a tourniquet to slow the man’s bleeding while rescue crews assembled below. The operation lasted about three hours and involved dozens of emergency workers, according to the Carrollton Fire Department.

Carrollton firefighters led the rescue, bringing a ladder truck to the farm. The Canton Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team set up ropes and rigging to lower the man safely to the ground once he was freed.

Crews from several other agencies assisted at the scene, including the Mohawk Valley Joint Fire District, the Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department, the Quad Ambulance District, the Great Trail Fire District and STAT MedVac.

A helicopter was brought in to fly the man to a hospital, but changing weather conditions kept it from taking off. Instead, rescuers coordinated an escorted ambulance run, with help from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, to get him to a trauma center in Akron as quickly as possible.

The Carrollton Fire Department credited the 911 dispatch centers in both Carroll and Stark counties for coordinating the large, fast-moving response, and asked the public to keep the patient and his family in their thoughts. Officials have not released the man’s name or condition.
