ATHENS — Ohio University has completed a master plan outlining potential renovations to the Vernon R. Alden Library, but the university does not yet have the funding to begin construction, according to a report this week.

The master plan, finished in July, lays out how future renovations of the campus landmark could look, from updated study spaces to modernized infrastructure.

Despite the completed plan, university officials say no construction can start until funding is secured. The report, published Sept. 24, did not specify a price tag or a timeline for when money might become available.

Alden Library, named for former university president Vernon R. Alden, serves as the main library for Ohio University’s Athens campus, supporting students, faculty and researchers across the institution’s colleges.

Like many public universities, Ohio University faces competing demands for limited capital dollars, from deferred maintenance on aging buildings to new facilities for growing programs. Library renovations must compete with those priorities.

University leaders have not said whether they will pursue state capital funding, private donations, or a combination of sources to pay for the Alden project. For now, the master plan remains a vision awaiting a budget.
