CANTON — A 20-year-old Massillon man has been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a January shooting that left one man dead, Stark County court officials announced.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Kristin G. Farmer sentenced De Iveon J. Newman on Thursday after he pleaded guilty Sept. 24 to receiving stolen property and improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or school safety zone, a charge that carried a gun specification. The stolen property was a handgun.
The charges stem from a shooting on the evening of Jan. 28 in the 600 block of Alan Page Drive SE, outside a building at Skyline Terrace in Massillon. Ta’Shaun M. Smith-Newman was killed in the shooting.
A grand jury declined to indict two other men initially charged in the case: a 19-year-old Canton man charged in Canton Municipal Court with murder, felonious assault and having a weapon under disability, and a 33-year-old man from the Dellroy area charged with complicity to commit murder and tampering with evidence.
Newman’s attorney, Fernando Mack of Cleveland, was offered a chance to comment on the sentencing Friday morning. A message was sent to his office.
The case was among several gun-violence prosecutions moving through Stark County courts this fall as local officials continue to grapple with shootings in the region’s urban neighborhoods.
