This increase in assaults on police officers is alarming. This trend is deeply disturbing because it not only puts the safety of those who protect us at risk but also undermines the rule of law that holds our communities together. A society where violence against law enforcement becomes normalized is one where everyone’s safety is threatened. We take these attacks seriously.
This brings us to the case of State of Ohio vs. James Hughes. On April 18, 2024, Richwood Police were called to a report of Hughes being intoxicated on the porch of a citizen’s home arguing with a resident, and creating a disturbance.
Two Richwood officers responded to the home. Officers tried to defuse the situation, but Hughes refused to cooperate and was arrested. After Hughes was handcuffed, he told the officers they were “F—– stupid! Calling one officer a “M—-f—-!” Hughes then headbutted the officers. Both officers required medical attention at Memorial Hospital. One of the officers sustained a concussion and continuing injuries causing her to be unable to perform her law enforcement duties for several days. The other officer sustained a minor injury.
Hughes was indicted by the Union County Grand Jury and pleaded guilty to two counts of Felonious Assault against a Peace Officer. Today the court sentenced Hughes to an indefinite aggregate prison term of 7.5 to 10.5 years.
