Founded in the late 1950s and operating for 48 years at its current East Pike location, Ohio Pottery has been a familiar landmark along the I‑70 corridor in eastern Muskingum County. Generations of travelers have stopped at the Norwich shop to browse its mix of pottery, gifts and closeout items, turning it into both a retail stop and a roadside tradition.
The closure comes as owner Mary Ellen Weingartner retires after spending decades at the helm of the business. Weingartner, who has been closely associated with Ohio Pottery’s identity and day‑to‑day operations, is stepping away as the building changes hands to another business, marking the end of an era for the property as well as the store.
In recent weeks, Ohio Pottery has drawn a steady stream of longtime customers making what will likely be their final visit. Social media posts from visitors and local organizations have shared memories and photos from inside the store, describing it as a “must‑stop” destination and thanking the business for its role in the community’s story.
The store is remaining open daily through Jan. 31, with shortened final‑month hours and an emphasis on clearing out remaining merchandise. In addition to regular sales, the remaining inventory is being auctioned as the business winds down, giving collectors and fans one last chance to take home pieces from Ohio Pottery’s shelves before the lights go out for good.
