More than just a school competition, the challenge is a comprehensive, student-led initiative focused on three core pillars: fitness, nutrition, and sleep. Designed primarily for students in grades 3 through 8, the program utilizes individual workbooks to guide children through a 30-day challenge, encouraging them to set and track their own SMART goals—a nod to Tressel’s emphasis on discipline and self-improvement.
“We want our young people to think about their health and well-being and how it can help them long term,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “By encouraging our kids to create healthy habits from a young age, we are setting a foundation for our next generation of Ohioans to prioritize their health.”
A Game Plan for Wellness
The Fitness Challenge moves students through Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, where they select activities and set measurable goals in categories like cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition, and sleep. The program is flexible, allowing schools to plug it in when it best fits their schedule, whether that’s before, during, or after school hours.
Governor Mike DeWine praised the Lieutenant Governor’s efforts: “The work that the Lt. Governor is doing through the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is making a positive impact on the lives of so many children across Ohio. We are setting a foundation for our next generation of Ohioans to prioritize their health and well-being and carry those habits.”
The program has already seen enthusiastic participation, with hundreds of schools and over 160,000 students opting into the first round. Based on feedback, the Lieutenant Governor’s office announced that eligibility has been expanded to include third-grade students, with an aim to involve nearly every child in Ohio in future rounds.
Focusing on the Whole Student
Reflecting Tressel’s master’s dissertation research, which explored the impact of physical health on overall well-being, the challenge incorporates mindfulness and gratitude. At the end of each level, students are prompted to reflect on their progress, connecting their physical actions to their mental and emotional health. It’s a holistic approach—recognizing that a healthier body supports a more focused and confident mind.
The second round of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is open for sign-ups now until November 28, with the program officially kicking off on February 2, 2026. The goal is clear: equip Ohio’s youth with the tools and mindset to be “Healthy Habits Champions” for life.
