TOLEDO — Jamon Holmes put on the performance of the night in northwest Ohio football on Friday, Oct. 16, running for 206 yards and six touchdowns as Toledo Whitmer downed Oregon Clay 56-35 in the BCSN Game of the Week.

The matchup brought together two of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference’s top three teams, with both Clay and Whitmer entering the night at 7-1. Whitmer’s win keeps the Panthers in the thick of the league race and sets up a league championship matchup next week against Perrysburg.

Holmes was the difference from start to finish. His 206 rushing yards powered a Whitmer offense that Clay’s defense could not slow, and his six touchdowns accounted for the bulk of the Panthers’ 56 points in a game that turned into a shootout between two of the area’s best teams.

Clay, which had dropped a 41-13 decision to Perrysburg a week earlier, still put up 35 points on the road — but every Eagles answer was met by another Holmes run, and Whitmer pulled away to win by three touchdowns.

Six touchdowns in a single game is a rare night at any level of football, and doing it against a 7-1 rival defense — in a game billed as the area’s best of the week — made Holmes’ outing the headline performance of Week 9 in the Toledo area. His 206 yards came on the ground against a Clay team that had allowed far less in most of its wins this fall.

The result reshapes the top of the TRAC standings heading into the final week of the regular season. Whitmer’s victory over a fellow 7-1 contender is exactly the kind of statement win that matters in October, both for the conference crown and for playoff positioning, and it gives the Panthers eight wins with one regular-season game left to play.

For Clay, the loss is a second straight defeat against the league’s heavyweights after the Perrysburg setback, and the Eagles will need to regroup quickly with the postseason approaching.

All eyes in the TRAC now turn to next week, when Whitmer meets Perrysburg with the league championship on the line. If Holmes runs anything like he did on Friday night — 206 yards and six scores against a 7-1 defense — the Panthers will like their chances of finishing the regular season on top.
