Dayton Police Investigate Apartment Shooting After Chaotic 911 Calls

DAYTON, Ohio — Dayton police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting at a northwest Dayton apartment complex after frantic 911 calls described a chaotic scene and at least one person wounded.

Officers were dispatched just after 9 p.m. to the Summit Square Apartments in the 700 block of Summit Square Drive on reports of gunfire at the complex, according to Dayton police and local dispatch records. When officers arrived, they found multiple cruisers converging on the parking lot, which was quickly roped off with crime scene tape as investigators began collecting evidence. Authorities have not yet said how many people were injured or released details about the condition of anyone hurt in the incident.

Recordings of 911 calls obtained by News Center 7 capture residents pleading for help and trying to keep a friend conscious as shots rang out outside their building. In one call, a caller told dispatchers they were “trying to keep their friend awake,” as the dispatcher repeatedly pressed for information about injuries and what led up to the shooting. Callers reported a flurry of activity in the parking lot but said they were too afraid to step outside to fully assess what had happened.

News crews at the complex late Tuesday and into early Wednesday reported seeing several Dayton police cruisers and a large portion of the parking area blocked off as officers searched for shell casings and other evidence. Police have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests had been announced as of Wednesday morning. A Montgomery County dispatch supervisor said the case remains an active investigation and declined to release additional details.

Investigators have not commented on a possible motive or whether the shooting was targeted. Detectives with the Dayton Police Department are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, has video from the complex around the time of the incident, or has information about those involved to contact Dayton police or Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.
