AKRON — The University of Akron swimming and diving program opens its home schedule this weekend by hosting the Zips Classic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17, at the Ocasek Natatorium, the first home meet of the 2026-27 season for a program coming off another championship year.

Akron enters the season after winning the Mid-American Conference championship for a fifth consecutive season last year, and for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons. That run has made the Zips the team to beat in the MAC, and the home opener gives the roster an early chance to post times against a strong field before conference dual meets begin in earnest.

The field includes six women’s teams and five men’s teams. Along with host Akron, the meet draws Cleveland State, Ohio State, Denison, Xavier and Youngstown State, a mix of in-state rivals, a Big Ten program and one of the top small-college programs in the region. Youngstown State said its swimmers will wear tech suits for the first time this season at the meet.

Competition began Friday at 1 p.m. with women’s 1-meter diving and men’s 3-meter diving, followed by the first swimming session at 5 p.m. Friday’s swimming lineup included the 400 medley relay, the 500 freestyle, the 200 individual medley, the 50 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay.

Saturday brings a full day of racing. The second swimming session starts at 10 a.m., diving resumes at 2 p.m. with the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter events, and the final swimming session begins at 6 p.m. Saturday’s events include the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 backstroke and the closing 400 freestyle relay, along with the 1,650 freestyle.

For Akron, a two-day invitational this early in the season is less about the team score than about measuring where each swimmer stands. Coaches use October meets to test relay combinations, see how newcomers handle a college meet schedule, and set the training targets that will carry the team toward the conference championship meet in the spring.

Fans who cannot attend can follow live results through the Meet Mobile app or watch on the Zips Digital Network. After this weekend, Akron turns to the dual-meet portion of its fall schedule with its home pool now open for the season.
