The firm will relocate to the **AES Building**, a landmark property in downtown Akron. City officials approved **nearly $250,000 in economic incentives** to support the move — a strategic investment that brings an estimated **$8 million annual payroll** back into the heart of the city.
Mayor Shammas Malik called the return a “powerful signal of momentum” for downtown, where post-pandemic economic recovery efforts have focused on attracting office tenants and revitalizing foot traffic.
“This is about more than a single company,” Malik said in a statement. “It’s about restoring vitality to the city’s center by bringing jobs, people, and energy back downtown.”
Buckingham, which has deep roots in Akron’s business and civic history, has been headquartered in Fairlawn since 2009. The firm’s leadership described the move as a homecoming and a recommitment to the community that fostered its success.
“We’re returning to our origins, and we’re excited to be part of downtown Akron’s growth story once again,” said Buckingham Managing Partner John Hill. “The AES Building offers the modern amenities our team needs, with the urban connection our clients and colleagues value.”
The relocation is expected to be completed later this year, with renovation work already underway at the AES Building. City officials hope Buckingham’s move will inspire other professional and corporate employers to consider downtown Akron as a viable, vibrant business hub.
Local economic development leaders celebrated the decision as a turning point in the city’s broader downtown strategy. “Each headquarters that moves in strengthens confidence in Akron’s future,” said a representative from Downtown Akron Partnership. “Buckingham’s return adds both prestige and economic momentum.”
