CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) is officially moving forward with a sweeping consolidation plan that will reshape the city’s public education landscape. The transformation, one of the largest in the district’s history, affects roughly 16,000 students across dozens of campuses.

Families began receiving school assignment letters this week outlining where their children will attend for the 2026–27 academic year. The plan merges 39 schools and permanently closes 18 buildings — a move district leaders say is necessary to address declining enrollment, aging infrastructure, and shifting community needs.

Superintendent Warren Morgan described the consolidation as a “difficult but essential step” toward stabilizing the district’s resources while maintaining quality education. “Our goal is to ensure every student learns in a safe, vibrant, and sustainable environment,” Morgan said in a statement. “This plan positions us to reinvest in programs, technology, and student supports.”

To help families navigate the transition, CMSD is holding multiple information sessions throughout December. A virtual meeting for families of students receiving special education services is scheduled for this evening, December 17, offering personalized guidance and placement details.

Community reaction so far has been mixed. While some parents support the district’s effort to streamline resources, others have expressed frustration over losing neighborhood schools that have served generations. Teachers’ union representatives have also voiced concerns about potential staffing reductions and larger class sizes.

District officials say the full list of merged and closed schools, along with transportation and staffing plans, will be available on the CMSD website later this week. Implementation of the consolidation is expected to begin gradually next fall, with the goal of having all changes in place by August 2026.
