The Weekend Transition: Rain to Wintry Mix
The weekend starts with relatively mild conditions, but the change begins as a strong low-pressure system moves in.
* Saturday: Expect mostly cloudy skies across the state. Current temperatures are holding around the low to mid-50s, but a cold rain is forecast to develop by Saturday night into Sunday morning.
* Sunday: The Plunge: Temperatures will plummet rapidly throughout the day. Rain will begin to mix with and eventually change over to wet snow across northern and central Ohio late Sunday afternoon into the evening. Daytime highs will struggle to reach the mid-40s before falling quickly into the 30s.
Commute Alert: Monday Morning Snow and Slick Roads
The most significant impact is expected to be felt during the Monday morning commute.
* Monday, Nov. 10: An arctic air mass will be firmly in place, locking down high temperatures in the mid-30s and overnight lows in the low-to-mid 20s.
* Wintry Conditions: Scattered light snowfall and snow showers are expected, particularly for central and northeastern Ohio. The changeover to snow, combined with freezing temperatures, raises the risk of isolated slick spots on bridges and overpasses.
* Wind Chill: Gusty winds will make it feel much colder, with wind chill values dropping into the teens. Residents are advised to bundle up and prepare for a chilly start to the work week.
* Northeast Ohio (Snowbelt): Areas downwind of Lake Erie should be on alert for the potential of Lake Effect Snow developing Sunday night and continuing into Monday. While total accumulations are currently forecast to be light for most of the state (a coating to an inch), localized areas in the traditional snowbelts could see higher totals.
Quick Recovery Mid-Week
The deep freeze will be short-lived, with temperatures making a quick rebound by the middle of the week.
* Tuesday: Lake effect snow showers may linger, particularly in the north, but temperatures will begin a slight upward trend, reaching the high 30s to low 40s.
* Wednesday & Thursday: Conditions are expected to dry out as high pressure returns, bringing mostly sunny to partly sunny skies. High temperatures will recover, climbing back into the low-to-mid 50s, providing a welcome break from the wintry blast.
Preparation Checklist
State officials and meteorologists urge drivers to exercise caution and prepare their vehicles for the winter season:
* Allow extra time for the Monday morning commute.
* Scrape all windows fully and ensure headlights are clear.
* Monitor local forecasts for updates on road conditions and localized alerts.
