YPSILANTI, Mich. — Toledo turned Eastern Michigan’s Homecoming into a showcase for both sides of its team on Saturday, building a 31-7 halftime lead and riding a suffocating defensive performance to a 34-14 Mid-American Conference win at Rynearson Stadium.
The Rockets scored on all five of their first-half possessions and never let their lead dip below 20 points in the second half. Toledo improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the MAC, while Eastern Michigan fell to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, snapping the Eagles’ three-game conference winning streak before a season-high crowd of 10,373.
Toledo opened the scoring on its first drive, a seven-play, 65-yard march finished by John Alan Richter’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Adjatay Dabbs. One snap later, defensive end Andrew Zock forced a fumble that Lucas Lambert-Pipkin recovered, setting up a 30-yard Reice Griffith field goal and a 10-0 lead. CJ Miller’s one-yard touchdown run made it 17-0 early in the second quarter.
Eastern Michigan answered with a 30-yard Noah Kim touchdown pass to Joshua Long, but Toledo responded almost immediately. Autavius Ison scored from 13 yards out to restore a 24-7 lead, and Miller capped a 90-yard, 11-play drive with his second touchdown run just before halftime to send the Rockets into the break ahead 31-7.
Richter was surgical, finishing 24 of 30 passing for 288 yards and a touchdown — an 80 percent completion rate, the best of his career. Ison rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries and a score for his first 100-yard game of the season, Miller added two rushing touchdowns, and Bryson Hammer led the receivers with five catches for 69 yards.
As good as the offense was, the defense was better. Toledo limited Eastern Michigan to 235 total yards and just 34 rushing yards on 28 carries — the fewest rushing yards the Rockets have allowed since Oct. 1, 2022 — including only one rushing yard through three quarters. The Eagles finished 0 for 4 on fourth down.
Zock was the engine of that pressure, recording nine tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and a career-high nine quarterback hurries, while linebackers Julian Fox and Isaac Zay posted 11 and 10 tackles. Toledo totaled six sacks and 16 quarterback hurries and recovered two fumbles, including a muffed punt in the third quarter that set up Griffith’s second field goal. Eastern Michigan’s third-quarter touchdown cut the margin to 34-14, and neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
The win was Toledo’s fourth straight over Eastern Michigan and its fourth straight MAC road win dating back to last season. The Rockets return to the Glass Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 24, for Senior Day against Western Michigan, with kickoff at noon on CBS Sports Network.
