BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — No. 5 Ohio State beat No. 4 Indiana 19-15 on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Memorial Stadium, snapping the Hoosiers’ 22-game winning streak — but the Buckeyes left Bloomington with their quarterback’s right arm in a sling and coach Ryan Day saying Julian Sayin will be out for several weeks.

Sayin threw for 235 yards on 15-of-29 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions before a sack by Indiana defensive lineman Mario Landino at the Ohio State 44-yard line injured him with 7:38 left in the fourth quarter. He had been sacked three times in the game. Freshman Luke Fahey replaced him and did not record a passing yard, leaving the defense to close it out. Defensive end Kenyatta Jackson Jr. also exited in the fourth quarter with help from trainers and did not return.

Ohio State led 3-0 after one quarter and 10-7 at halftime, the go-ahead score coming on Sayin’s 2-yard touchdown pass to running back Bo Jackson with eight seconds left in the first half — the first time Indiana has trailed at halftime of a home game under coach Curt Cignetti. That score answered an Indiana touchdown set up by an interception: Jamari Sharpe tipped a Sayin pass intended for Smith to Amare Ferrell, and Turbo Richard ran it in from seven yards two plays later. Jackson finished with 18 carries for 56 yards plus the touchdown catch; Smith caught four passes for 68 yards and a score.

Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover completed 20 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown, with Becker catching nine passes for 165 yards and Nick Marsh adding three catches for 57 yards and a score. But the Hoosiers managed only 73 rushing yards, and nickel back Jay Timmons, back after missing two games, stripped Davion Chandler after a catch on Indiana’s opening second-half drive to give Ohio State the ball at the Indiana 45.

The ending came down to a foot. After Sayin’s injury, Ohio State punted twice, and a roughing-the-passer penalty on Jeremaine Mathews moved Indiana from the Ohio State 48 to the 33 on its final drive. On fourth-and-4 from the 27 with 1:02 left, Hoover found Marsh open in the end zone — but Marsh’s left foot landed out of bounds, the pass was ruled incomplete, and the Buckeyes took over and knelt out the clock.

The loss was Indiana’s first since a playoff defeat at Notre Dame on Dec. 20, 2024, ending the FBS’s longest active winning streak, a run that included a 16-0 season and the program’s first national championship in 2025. Indiana falls to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten and travels to Michigan next week.

Ohio State improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten, in control of its playoff path. The cost is real, though: with a bye next week, Fahey is expected to make his first career start when Ohio State travels to Los Angeles to face USC in two weeks.
