TOLEDO — Lucas County families who need help with Christmas this year have one final window to sign up in person, as The Salvation Army of Northwest Ohio and the Marines’ Toys for Tots program wrap up their 2026 Christmas assistance registration on Friday, Oct. 16.
Registration has been running in person Oct. 6 through 9 and again Oct. 13 through 16, in two daily sessions — 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. — at The Salvation Army, 620 N. Erie St. in Toledo. Friday’s afternoon session is the last chance to apply in person for this year’s program, and applicants must be Lucas County residents, with only one application allowed per household.
What the program provides depends on the ages of the children in the home. Toys are provided for children from infancy through age 12. Households whose children are 13 to 18 years old can also apply, and they receive food assistance instead, in the form of a Kroger gift card to help cover holiday groceries.
Getting through the door with the right paperwork is the difference between a completed application and a wasted trip, especially on the final day. Applicants need to bring a government-issued photo ID, a birth certificate for each child age 12 and younger — a printout from Job and Family Services is also accepted — and guardian papers where they apply.
Two more documents round out the list: proof of every other member of the household, and proof of address. Salvation Army officials, led locally by executive directors Majors J.R. and Candy Fritsch of The Salvation Army of Greater Toledo, ask every applicant to bring the full set so registrations can be processed on the spot rather than held up for missing records.
The registration model is deliberately old-fashioned. Families apply face to face, their documents are checked by staff, and their children’s ages are matched against the program’s rules at the table — a process designed to make sure toys and food help land with eligible Lucas County households and are not claimed twice.
The Christmas assistance drive is one of the largest seasonal efforts in northwest Ohio, pairing The Salvation Army’s local intake operation with the Marine Corps’ long-running Toys for Tots collection, which gathers donated toys for distribution to children whose families could not otherwise afford them.
Families who still need to register should head to 620 N. Erie St. before the final session closes at 3 p.m. Friday — with photo ID, birth certificates, and proofs of household and address in hand. After Friday, this year’s in-person registration is closed.
