DAYTON — The Dayton Art Institute previews its newest special exhibition tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 14, when members gather from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Shaw Gothic Cloister for the opening of “Wall Power! Spectacular Quilts from the American Folk Art Museum,” with remarks at 6:30 p.m.
The evening doubles as a first chance for many members to meet the museum’s new director and president, Jessimi Jones. A second members’ opening follows Thursday morning, Oct. 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Leo Community Room.
The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, Oct. 17, and runs through Jan. 10, 2027, in Gallery 120. Organized by the American Folk Art Museum in New York, it presents quilts made from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century, grouped around an early 1900s craft revival, designs from Amish communities, work by African American makers and traditional 19th-century patterns. Quilts from the Dayton museum’s own textile collection will be shown alongside the traveling works.
The show is complemented by “Power of Remembrance,” a display of panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which museum staff selected in part for their Dayton-area connections.
