DAYTON: A man wanted in a Dayton homicide surrendered to police late Thursday morning after a heavy law enforcement presence surrounded a house in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Boulevard and SWAT crews fired tear gas into the home.
Multiple Dayton police crews and SWAT responded to assist the U.S. Marshals Service in locating Angelo Jamille Champion Sr., 42, who refused to leave the house. Officers tried commands, knocking, face-to-face communication, telephones and even drones to convince him to come outside, according to police, but nothing worked until the gas went in.
Champion was arrested around 1:20 p.m. Thursday, according to Miami Valley jails booking records. Because of the tear gas, he was taken to a hospital to be decontaminated. A woman and child who had also been inside left the house and were in a safe location before crews deployed the gas. Police said no one was injured, and nearby residents were asked to shelter in place or leave their homes while the operation unfolded.
Champion faces charges of murder, felonious assault and having weapons while under disability in connection with a Nov. 23 fatal shooting. Police officials praised the cooperation between the Marshals Service, Dayton police, SWAT and the hostage negotiation team, calling it a successful operation with a peaceful surrender.
