CINCINNATI — A man already in state prison now faces new charges in Hamilton County in a case that dates back a decade, after investigators say a DNA database hit gave them the break they needed.
A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Neziah Gibson, 24, on Oct. 8 on counts of attempted rape, aggravated robbery and gross sexual imposition, according to Cincinnati police. Gibson is currently held at the Madison Correctional Institution in London, Ohio, in a separate case.
Police say the new charges stem from an April 2016 incident in Evanston, in which a stranger was targeted at gunpoint. Gibson would have been 14 years old at the time. Authorities were notified when it happened, but investigators could not identify a suspect and the case went cold.
The case was reopened in August after the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System returned a profile match through the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office, police said. That match is what led detectives back to Gibson.
Court records tied to the new case were not yet available when the indictment became public, and police have not explained what prompted the DNA profile to surface after so many years. Gibson’s next court steps in Hamilton County have not been announced. NewsForce247 will follow the case as it moves through court.
