The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a late-night two-vehicle crash that killed a 26-year-old Akron woman on Interstate 480 in Brooklyn Heights late Saturday night.
Troopers say Kreigh Grapel-Barnette was driving a white 2007 Toyota Yaris eastbound on I-480 around 11:30 p.m. when she drove off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median and collided head-on with a gray 2026 Subaru Outback traveling the other way.
Brooklyn Heights Fire and EMS crews transported Grapel-Barnette to Metro Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The 56-year-old driver of the Subaru and two passengers, ages 64 and 23, all from Oak Park, Illinois, were also taken to Metro Hospital with minor injuries.
The patrol said everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. Westbound lanes of I-480 were closed for about two and a half hours while investigators worked the scene, with help from Brooklyn Heights police and fire, Newburgh Heights EMS, Valley View, Garfield Heights, Cuyahoga Heights and Independence police, Kufner Towing and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation, and troopers have not said what caused the Yaris to leave the roadway. No charges have been announced.
