CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police shot and killed an armed man inside the Talbert House in the University Heights neighborhood Friday evening after responding to a report of an active shooter at the four-story homeless shelter.
Officers were called to the Talbert House on Central Parkway around 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 25, according to police spokesperson Brad Underwood. SWAT officers responded alongside patrol officers and exchanged gunfire with the man as first responders approached the door.
The man then ran north through the building’s hallway before a second exchange of gunfire, Underwood said. He was struck and died while being taken to a hospital. Police could not confirm whether the man was a resident of the shelter.
No officers were injured. Interim Police Chief Adam Hennie said at the scene that “it does not appear that there are any other victims inside the building.” A press conference was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, with additional details.
Talbert House is an accredited, licensed provider of mental health and substance use programs, with housing services across Southwest Ohio focused on adults, veterans and families. The organization says its mission is to empower clients to sustain their independence.
Friday’s shooting was not the first fatal police shooting at a Talbert House property. In 2018, officers shot and killed James Clay at the organization’s Walnut Hills location while attempting to arrest him; Clay had pulled out a pellet gun that appeared to be a real firearm.
