CINCINNATI — The NCAA has closed its investigation into former University of Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s gambling activity, clearing the university of any wrongdoing.

NCAA enforcement staff completed an inquiry this summer into Sorsby’s prohibited betting during his time at Cincinnati and found that the violation belonged to the player alone. “The inquiry is now closed and the student-athlete was found to have committed a Level III violation,” said Cincinnati senior associate athletic director for communications Zach Stipe.

Sorsby, who played the 2024 and 2025 seasons for the Bearcats before transferring to Texas Tech, was ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA in April after placing thousands of impermissible sports bets over four years at Indiana and Cincinnati.

The case drew scrutiny after Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, said during a Dallas radio interview that Cincinnati was aware of Sorsby’s gambling. The NCAA sent an official letter of inquiry to the school in early July, and Cincinnati cooperated throughout the process, Stipe said.

According to the investigation, Sorsby’s betting was first flagged when the ProhiBet app on his phone blocked an attempted wager. He acknowledged placing at least 165 impermissible bets on college and professional sports totaling at least $38,000 in 2024, including three wagers on Cincinnati men’s basketball placed through a FanDuel account he shared with a friend.

Sorsby also made at least 40 bets while a freshman at Indiana in 2022, though none were on games in which he played. The NCAA said his bets during his college career totaled at least $90,000.
