DAYTON — A violent round of storms shattered a basement window at a Dayton home Sunday night, sending water rushing inside as flash flooding overwhelmed parts of the Miami Valley.

Video of the flooding shows water pouring through the broken window as the woman recording feared for her safety while the water kept rising. Some areas around Dayton saw up to 6 inches of rain in just a few hours during Sunday night’s storms.

The deluge capped a soggy stretch for western Ohio. Saturated ground from earlier rains meant the new downpours ran straight into creeks, streets and basements, triggering flash flood warnings across the region.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Wilmington had warned that slow-moving thunderstorms could drop several inches of rain in a short window, and the storms delivered. Flash flooding can turn deadly in minutes, and officials remind residents never to drive through flooded roadways.

The storms are part of a volatile September weather pattern that has swung Ohio from heavy rain and flooding to crisp, dry fall air. Nineteen Ohio counties were placed under a state of emergency earlier this week after severe flooding caused road closures, property damage and stranded motorists.

Drier weather has since moved in, giving cleanup crews and homeowners a chance to assess the damage.
