A 26-year-old man was killed shortly after midnight Thursday after being struck while crossing a road on Columbus’ Southeast Side, police said.
Elijah Tompkins attempted to cross South Hamilton Road near Blakestone Lane at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when he was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado traveling southbound, according to Columbus police.
Investigators said Tompkins was crossing against a “don’t walk” signal while the Silverado had a green light. Drivers stopped at a red light on eastbound Blakestone Lane witnessed the crash and described it to police, the department said.
Medics transported Tompkins in critical condition to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m. Thursday.
The adult driver of the Chevrolet remained at the scene until police arrived. Police said impairment is not believed to be a factor, though the department’s Accident Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Accident Investigation Unit at 614-645-4767 or to provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
